Rummy Rules

13-Card Rummy is a popular rummy card game in India. It is a type of draw & discard game which is played between 2 to 6 players with two decks of cards including a total of two jokers. It is a common rummy variant in India where to win the game, a player must make a valid declaration. One of the two decks is closed while the other deck is an open deck created with the discarded number cards by the players.

The rummy rules are quite simple & easy to master for everyone to enjoy the card game. Each player is assigned with 13 cards which they must form in valid sequences or sets to win the game. A player who makes the declaration first wins the game.

  • Every card belongs to a particular group/suite – Hearts, Clubs, Spades & Diamonds
  • Cards rank from low to high – Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, and King.
  • The face cards ie. Ace, Jack, Queen, and King hold a value of 10 points each while all other cards such as 2,3, 5, etc hold the points equal to their face value

What is a Sequence?

A sequence in a real cash rummy is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. It has two types:

Pure Sequence

A pure sequence can be created by grouping three or more consecutive cards of the same suit without using a joker card.

Example:

  • 6♦-7♦-8♦ - It is a pure sequence consisting of three consecutive cards from the same suit ie. Diamonds
  • 7❤-8❤-9❤ - It is also a pure sequence with three consecutive cards of Hearts

Note - A pure sequence can also be formed using a Joker card but it should be in its original suit & value ie. Wild Joker cards. For example: 4♥-5♥-6♥ (WJ). Here 6♥ is used as a Wild Joker to complete the joker.

Impure Sequence

An impure sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards belonging to the same suit but has a joker card as a replacement.

Example:

  • 10♥️ J♥️ Q♥️ PJ - Here, a Printed joker card is used to replace the King of Hearts, making it an impure sequence.
  • 6♦️ 7♦️ J♠️ 9♦️ - Here, a Joker card is used to replace the 8 of Spades. Hence an impure sequence

What Is A Set?

A set is a group of three or more cards having the same value but from different suites.

Pure Set

Set without Joker Card

  • 7♦-7♥-7♠ - This set has 7s from different suites, hence, a pure set
  • 2♦-2♠-2♥-2♣ - This has 2s from different suites, hence, it is a pure set.

With a Joker

  • 4♦️ 4♣️ 4♠️ PJ - A pure set with 4s of different suites and a printed joker as a replacement
  • 6♠-6♣-K♥ (WJ) - A pure set using K♥ as a Wild Joker Card to replace 6 of any other suit ie. Diamond

Impure/ Invalid Sets

  • 3♦-3♠-3♦-3♣ - An Invalid set as contains two 3s of the same suit ie. Diamond
  • A♣-A♣-K♦ (WJ) - Invalid set as used two As of Clubs
